@Skione65 and @Michael Russo I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to get a little freaked out that there's been zero Midnight sightings and we're only a bit over a month away from start of production. I was disappointed (but not at all shocked) when the Alpha's Hyper Silver was dropped in favour of the standard Model S silver. But going to be super bummed if Midnight Silver doesn't make the cut. The one shred of logic I'm hanging on to is that it doesn't make any sense for them to offer us all the other current Model S colours and not that one.
Best for last?...
As I stated 38 posts ago yesterday - or was it the day before (the past quickly gets blurred the last few weeks with posting intensity! ;)) - Midnight Silver remains my first choice, yet I have a couple of back up plans (probably b. Silver and c. Blue...). Yet at this point, I find the car design (on the outside ;)) so cool almost in all colors that this color is not the most important source of issue I'll have... Now if the total 14 cu. ft volume of cargo space, for front and rear (!), would be confirmed, that would really bother me more... that and 215+ miles of range showing up as 216-220...
Made my peace with the no HUD thing yet only because there are alternative and because I believe (secretly - don't tell anyone... :D) it may be added by late 2018 when I order... :rainbow::rainbow::rainbow:

To me the cargo space is not a big deal. My 2008 A4 trunk is not big at all... When I need more space I use the mini van. Like you I hope by the time we configure our lovely car (early 2019), many moore options would be available.

I agree, I found my 2007 A4 had plenty enough room to travel with four people in the car, as long as they weren't serious steamer-trunk packers. If the 3 trunk is close to that volume I'll be fine with it, and will consider the frunk a bonus. Frankly I find many of us get a little obsessed with the cargo business. I lived just fine with a Miata as my only car for 2 years. You just have to occasionally get a little more creative.
And if you really want to bring the kitchen sink we already know there's a roof rack option.

I understand that roof racks and tow hitch racks are nice cargo options for many people. I'm not one of them. I simply want the Model ☰ to have vastly superior cargo capacity to ICE vehicles in the segment. Why? Not so much for me -- I travel light. Mostly for the sake of bragging rights, and the ability to demonstrate that an electric drivetrain allows for greater internal capacity for passengers and luggage.

FYI... Hyundai Ioniq Electric is quite a bit shorter than the Tesla Model ☰, has no frunk at all, and has vastly more than a 14 ft³ of cargo space. Given the shorter length of the Ioniq, I'd expect the liftback simply allows around 4 ft³ to 5 ft³ of more 'usable' or 'useful' cargo space, compared to the area over the fixed 'shelf' behind the seats in the Model ☰. Certainly not 11 ft³ to 13 ft³ more available volume.

Apparently : The 2016 BMW 3 Series sedan has 13 cubic feet of trunk space,
Audi A4 2017 is also 13 cubic foot

Which means the Model 3 has less actual rear trunk space than BMW or Audi A4 (because the frunk doesnt help to carry a large object in the rear trunk).

In my case the only time I need a large trunk is rare and its when I get large boxes at IKEA, flatscreen TV, or some stuff from a hardware store, If the seats can easily fold flat and there's no choke point narrowing the width between the trunk and the folded back seat I might be ok.

My Volt only specs out at 10.6 ft³ of cargo space, so 14 ft³ will be a luxury! :D

Yes, looking at the still, I think the rims are different than the Alpha, but those rims are a game changer! I can tell you from experience that those rims are going to be more aero than the V spokes or turbines. They will add some efficiency to the range. Those rims are just begging for customizing! I hope they make it to production!

Yes the frunk looks massive (at least the lid). I agree, we are in for some real surprises.

I'm all excited, where's my heart medicine.
I think the aperture looks quite big. Bigger than I had expected anyways. Especially considering the combined cargo storage is supposed to be 14 cubic feet. I still don't understand how it can be that small. Fingers crossed it's 14 cf in the trunk

Hmm.. I didn think of that.. I think thats very possible. I think that would make sense if they're driving around on a test track.. you wouldnt want to keep a tool box in the back seat and if they used the trunk, I would think the guy shooting the video would've included that footage

A couple of other observations after watching the video again.. while the 2 guys are on the track wrenching on something, the driver door and the back door behind the driver is open also.. later the 2nd guy gets in the driver seat, but he looks like he ducks down, like he's doing something under the dash..

Also, at the end of the video when they drive by the RC, there's some kind of microphone looking device attached to the right side of the driver seat

I dont know enough about whats under the frunk.. but what could they doing up in there?

The frunk is definitely bigger BTW.
Before you get too excited, it looks like the frunk is missing the finishing plastic/carpeting. It may not actually be any bigger once finished off.

For comparison, here's a Model S frunk:

And a Model S with frunk removed:

I disagree. you can clearly see the rubber seal for the trunk, maybe its not covered with carpet but it seems to have some plastic covers and not exposed blue body colored metal subframes

My old rusty VW Jetta 2006 has a reported 16.cu ft of storage... and yet the Model 3 is supposed to be over 20cm longer... #confused #OptionsSpeculation

I have a Mini Cooper (2006) Convertible. I measured the trunk space to the inch and found that it totaled about 6 cu. ft. Our dogs normally take up the back seat, so 14 cu. ft. should seem like a lot.

As there are different standards used withim USA and Europe, it is not possible to compare any cars without knowing exactly which standard was used. Also, there are differences between measuring sedans and hatchbacks - I belive this is the reason for the big difference between the S and 3 cargo space. Below is a good read on this matter. *First post here - hoping to swap my Passat wagon with a 3 even though we are a family of 4 (and a midsized dog) who love to go skiing on the weekends...

Could not post link as I am new to this forum, but google "how is car cargo space measured" and a Cars. com article should come up first.

It's likely that there are different ways to measure cargo capacity, especially between Europe and North America. It's pretty complicated. Something about measuring the number of contiguous cubes that can fit in the space. And for hatchbacks you're allowed to just do the calculus and measure ever single centimeter; that's why the Fit has 17 cubic feet with the seats up, even though you could really only fit about one piece of luggage back there.

Also, with how much Tesla is trying to unsell the 3, it wouldn't surprise me if 14 is without the frunk and with the cargo floor installed. I'm still withholding judgement until I see the darn thing. It looked quite deep in the original reveal.

What is the likelihood that the premium audio option (if available) will take up additional trunk space? Does the Model S lose trunk capacity due to the upgraded sound? I'm also wondering about the dual motor option taking up frunk cargo space.

#53 ·
The Model S loses space in the rear (hatch) area for premium sound for the subwoofers. They go in the rear well areas in the back. I personally love those little areas for storage so I'm glad I didn't get premium sound for that alone (plus I've heard both and can't tell the difference). Not sure how/where it will fit if its available on the 3 but it's unlikely to be there on the early versions I think.

I have the larger version. I keep a 14-50 extension cord in the "microwave" area along with a number of adapters etc. They're out of the way of normal traffic but there when I need them:

While we're talking about what the S also used to have this really nice pocket on the front of the driver's seat. I use it every time I drive my car. It's gone in the newer models sadly. Wish it was there for the 3:

Since the M3 isn't a hatchback like the MS, perhaps the sub(s) will not be located in the trunk area as in the MS.
