Automatic Noise Leveling

I am surprised that Tesla's do not come with automatic noise leveling like most luxury cars do. This is a feature that automatically increases/decreases the volume of the sound system based upon background noise.

I thought all cars nowadays have this feature, but apparently not Tesla's.

I think we (or, at least I) might be confusing two different issues here.

One is Auto Volume Control which increases or decreases the sound of the audio system based (supposedly) on ambient noise but I think most are based on vehicle speed. I've had this in at least two vehicles and always disabled it as it turned the volume too high or too low for my liking. If I recall correctly, VW group called theirs GALA, graduated audio leveling something. Tesla's do not have this, I think they're focusing on dual pane/acoustic glass and other sound deadening tactics to make the vehicle more quiet which may make this feature not needed.

The other is Automatic Noise Cancelling, which Model S/X have where the vehicle identifies unwanted sound (Road noise, wind noise, etc) and emits the anti-sound equivalent thru the speakers resulting in a more quiet experience and minimizes the need to adjust the audio system's volume. This is not common in all vehicles, although I think more than a few other vehicle manufacturers offer it.

I remember speed-dependent automatic volume adjustments on vehicles as far back as mid-90s GM models when some of their radios gained access to a data bus that included vehicle speed. Most of my last couple-dozen vehicles had it. My '19 MX-5 Miata has it.

Several of these vehicles also had active noise cancellation and a few had also added "fake" engines sounds.

Both features are fairly common these days - including active noise cancellation, which allows automakers to save money and weight by reducing the amount of sound-absorbing materials and compensate for it using out-of-phase sound from the existing audio system.

I, too, am surprised that Tesla doesn't include automatic volume adjustments - this could be easily added with a software update.

I seem to recall Tesla had speed based volume adjustment in the early Model 3 firmware (up until mid 2018?) then it just sort of disappeared. Whether it was an intentional feature or a bug, since then, the closest we have is the volume reduction when opening the door or shifting into reverse.

I’ll look through my old OMs and see if it’s mentioned.
