Crack in rear glass

My delivery is scheduled for tomorrow. Tesla already reached out to me today to say the back glass is cracked, they have ordered a replacement, and to still come accept the car at delivery tomorrow.

Has this happened with anyone else?

Not a good start to say the least. Surely it must not be that bad if they are telling me to still come to delivery tomorrow.

Rear roof glass cracked this morning on the passenger side. No impact evident, just from side down to rear.

I had the rear seats down to carry some flat, moving boxes. Last cold snap, I already noticed the defroster heater wires weren't working. But with 2 years, 3 months, and 50,081 miles, I suspect it won't be a warranty repair.

I'll share photos later and what happens with Tesla service.

ps. This image was taken from a rear view mirror photo so it is left-right reversed looking like it is behind the driver. It is actually diagonally behind the passenger seat. Sorry for the confusion.

I got the new glass installed, without any problem. it was the first time that shop did a Model 3 rear glass, but they said they've done S rear glass, and 3 front glass before, so they didn't think it would be a big deal. The install seems fine. Everything is as square and even as it ever is on these early Model 3s. (I was at the Tesla shop helping a friend pick up an X recently, and the new 3s fit and finish looks very good.) I haven't had a leak test yet, because it's been raining, but not very hard when the car is out. Either it will stop raining and I'll get a car wash, or there will actually be a downpour while the car is outside.

The only odd thing, is an orange blob in the middle of the rear glass, a few inches up into the dark part. It is clearly part of the defroster, but I don't remember it from the old glass. It is only visible from the outside, and only with the light reflected just right. That makes it nearly impossible to take a picture of. The slightly brighter blob that I've circled is in the glass, and not a reflection from the sky. The defroster does work.

Do other people's cars have this?

Take a short video instead and upload it to YouTube.

I find that these sorts of things are much easier to see in a video, as you can see how it moves (or doesn't) as the camera moves slightly around.

I ended up scheduling with Safelite to get the rear glass replaced, and they say they expect to have it on Wednesday, and will get the car done on Thursday. Based on the delays other people have reported in this thread, I was expecting the car to be out of commission for a month. I hope I just got lucky on timing and spare parts availability has picked up, so other people have started to get theirs replaced, too.

My guess is garage door closed on it and the safety wasn’t working. Not sure I’d drive with that. Not sure that would even be legal with that much damage?

There are two safeties. The optical one which would not fire that high. And pressure sensitive one that could be adjusted to firm (or not). Because it wouldn't take much to crack it. The door won't reverse instantly. All would take is few mm before the glass cracked.

My guess is it's cracked on both layers. There could chips of glass on the inside. It should not cave in but bits of glass could get all over. You might want to take the rear seat out to avoid damage which isn't hard.

One of the big aftermarket places have a nice video of putting on fitted covers that shows how to take it out.

I had service appointment scheduled for Monday (worked out for me since I'm off of work). Got a text today from Service Center representative that they have to cancel my appointment because they won't have the glass in time. Also, it is on back order and they don't know when it will be available. Wonderful....

My crack in rear window is to be fixed tomorrow.

Anyone know how they get these windows out? Do I really want to know ?

Anyone get repeat crack? Or know if there are changes to the glass or procedure to install it updated?

No idea how it happened or when! Had to be in the last week since I wash it every week. What a bummer! Put a claim in Geico and picked the Cherry Hill NJ service center to repair. Made appt there as well. Hopefully it can be replaced in the next 2 weeks (when my appt is)

The infamous rear window cracked appeared on mine. It is less than a month old with about 800 miles.. This morning I had taken it to a tint shop and the sharp eye of the guy tinting caught it.. Its not easily visible as you have to check it at an angle. The earliest appt I got at Burbank CA was 5.15..can mobile service folks fix it?

Is there any chance this could shatter? Just explode.
No. The rear window in the model 3 is laminated like a windshield. It won't shatter.

I can't actually find an example of a rear window damaged in an accident.
This car got rear-ended hard, but as far as I can tell the rear window is still in one piece.

I was originally scheduled to go in on Monday. They had to postpone the appointment to Friday (yesterday) because it was taking them longer to get the glass than expected. I brought it in yesterday morning at 8AM, and they had it completed by 5PM. The service adviser was great. He was very polite and seemed to be very attentive to my concerns. I requested a rental as well and was given a 2014 Model S 85 as a rental.

I like how the app also told me that the car had completed its service. Shortly after that notice, the service adviser texted me asking me if I could get there by 6PM to pick it up. I thought it was funny that it also notified me that the 2019.8.3 update was available while it was in the shop. I installed it after I brought it home.

Although I was bothered that my new car that has had a reputation in the media for questionable build quality had an issue, I was very happy with the way I was treated and with the quality of the work done. Two big thumbs up for the Indianapolis / Castleton service center.

They said they leak tested it and took it for a test drive to validate there was no additional wind noise. They also washed it and vacuumed it before they returned it. I checked when we got home, there were no evidence of any water leaks so I am happy. I am heading to Michigan for the weekend and it will be sitting outside in the rain the entire time so a leak would be very bad.
That's great Bob. I too had a crack on my rear window. I went to the Tesla Service Center in Tysons Corner, Va. The service tech determined it was a stress crack and replaced my rear window in under 4 hours. They were fantastic. It's been 4 months and I have had no issues with the replacement.

I noticed the smallest little speck of a chip in my glass on the back window? Is this worth mentioning at my service appointment or is it nothing to worry about?
Don't bother going to Tesla for that. It won't be covered under warranty.

Talk to your car insurance company. Many policies offer free, no-deductible windshield repair (and low-deductible windshield replacement). If yours does, you can have it repaired.

I can't really tell the scale in the photo, but that appears to be small, and with no crack emanating from it, so I probably wouldn't bother doing anything.

I'm curious, when were your cars built?
And since I wasn't 100% sure before, I just went out to look at my car and its build date is 12/18.

I also noticed on the old glass had a warped spot like the glass was thicker. The warp was near the top of the window following the antennae line down from the top about 3 defroster lines down from the tinted area on the same side as the crack. Maybe it was thicker there and thinner in near the crack? Either way, I haven't noticed any warped areas anywhere on the new window yet and this time I went looking for it along with the service adviser to make sure.

I noticed a crack in my rear window on Saturday. I called in to the service center and discussed it and scheduled a service appointment for next week Monday to have it fixed.

I ran my finger across the crack and the glass still felt smooth. I then used some tools like dental tools where the tip makes a 90 degree turn and comes to a point and I couldn't feel it connect with anything meaning that the crack is in the layer of glass inside the car.

Did the windows stay intact one it was replaced for the others that had this problem previously?

I forgot to mention that I have had my car for about 3 weeks and it has 764 miles. I believe the car's build date was in December.
