My Model 3 is 6 days old. Today the same thing happened to my FRUNK and it will not open. In addition, I am also getting a message that the charge port door needs to be serviced and to call TESLA.

I called service and they promised to have a TECH call me back and make an appointment. That was 8 hours ago.

This does not bode well for TESLA being a reliable car. I wonder why they cannot at least return a phone call in 8 hours. Over worked?
I would make sure you talk to someone at your service center, not the main service call center. The local SC jumped right on mine, and I got my call back from the call center a good 36 hours later, after my car had already been picked up. BTW, they said that now that they've done this, they can handle it on site. Just at the time, no one at any nearby service centers had any idea how to manually release the frunk or replace it (the down side of being an early adopter I guess).

When you call your SC, tell them if they don't know how to fix the issue to call the Charlotte NC service center and talk to whoever worked on my car. They will go above and beyond to get the issue resolved.

Just took my first reload trip for a week long vacation. Supercharger was awesome (471 miles/hr of charge), but then the frunk with my suitcase got stuck the secondary latch isn’t moving. Soft reboot, full power down, phone call with the service team and nothing worked. Tesla Service van coming out, but said it would be 48 hours...Hopefully it’s resolvable or else I have nothing to wear for the rest of the week...

If they have questions about it, have them call the service center in Charlotte (Matthews) NC. They had no clue where the manual release was when it happened but they do now and said if it happened now, they could take care of it in my driveway.

What's your VIN number and when did you take delivery?

I have a different problem with my frunk. Since we picked it up about a week and a half ago I get a warning that the frunk is open. It isn’t.

This first happened the day we picked it up. Then a week later. Never when we first start out. As the day heats up, we get the warning. Now it’s almost daily - especially with the heat here recently.

It has been reported and they are going to change the micro switch sometime soon. Hopefully that resolves the issue.

This Sunday, 2 Sept 2018, Labor Day weekend, I had my Frunk stuck shut like McHoffa.

Clicked app button for Frunk vaoop (electric sound) from the motor
But no vaoop, cung (electrical then mechanical sound) that occurs when Frunk opens.
The Frunk showed open on the app & inside the console Pad, but the Frunk is completely closed. it wouldn’t budge.
I couldn’t put the M3 in drive. The big warning about driving with the front trunk open.
I clicked on the lock app to lock all the doors, charging port, & trunks. Then I clicked it again to unlock.
Frunk showed closed. I could put the M3 in drive, meaning the Frunk is latched shut.
Tried to open Frunk again via console Pad button.
Same problem. Frunk will not unlatch.
Rebooted system, same problem
Rebooted again. Same problem

Called Tesla Roadside.
After 45 min waited, talked to Jason. He asked if I was in a safe place, nice .
He said to press hard above the “T” badge, then click open on the app. Frunk showed open but it didn’t work.
Jason said to take a credit card & try to move it mechanically, Frunk wouldn’t budge.
He asked if I had anything like groceries or some of value I needed. I told him no, just my mobile charger & cleaning supplies. He put in a ticket & said they would get back with me in 24-48 business hours. Since it was a holiday weekend, Monday doesn’t count in business hours.

Angela txtd me on 4th Sept (Tuesday), We scheduled a T-Ranger (mobile service) to come out to fix it. The Ranger will be coming out with a primary & secondary release cable.

Update... the T-Ranger came & re-placed the primary actuator for the Frunk. Jerod had to put the car up & remove the undercarriage plastic to get the Frunk open. He add clips to the undercarriage that were missing since delivery. I had a noise coming from my glovebox (he has ordered a new glovebox to be installed once it comes in). Jerod said the old actuator will go back to engineering to test "why" it failed. BTW, I purchased some extra windshield wipers from him.
Most excellent customer service!

Today I went to open the frunk to get my laptop out before I had to leave, and I heard the latch release, but the hood was flush with the car still. The screen showed the frunk open. I opened the app, and it also showed it open. I hit it again just in case and I hear the little motor spin, but the frunk is still closed.

I did a soft reboot, nothing
I did a hard reboot, nothing
I tried the battery trick on the front bumper tow hitch hole, nothing

Putting it in drive brings up a big warning about driving with the front trunk open

I powered down the car, and when it powers back up, it says the frunk is closed, but when I hit the button it says it's open, but it's still flush with the car.

I tried using credit cards to pry gently upward and the frunk is definitely latched.

Tesla says mobile service can get here in 24-48 hours. I'm 3 hours from service center, so driving it in in the middle of the week isn't exactly an option.

Meanwhile, my laptop is in the frunk still.... awesome.
We picked up our Model 3 on Friday, September 14th. Left on a road trip...came back Tuesday, unloaded travel bags and (luckily) our charging cable. Closed frunk and now it will not open. Just sent message through my account of the problem to Tesla. Having just taken delivery, I don't understand why this problem hasn't been "fixed" as it seems the stuck frunk issue is not a new one.

I see from your profile that you are an inactive user. But just in case you should revisit, I would like to hear the resolution to this issue. I too am currently experiencing the Frunk failing to get past the secondary latch on opening. Called service, they ordered a secondary actuator assembly replacement, but would be nice to be able to open in the meantime. At least there are no perishables in there!
When I had my headlight replaced, the tech showed me how they would access that now. You have to have the wheel well opened and the right tool to reach up in there to pull the cable manually.

A tech ended up coming out to my car and had a tool to pop open the frunk for me so I could get my bag out. I had to then take it to a service center to get the secondary actuator replaced. I was not able to unlatch the lock myself.

Update: After my frunk wouldn't open (wouldn't get past 2nd latch), I emailed my local service center. They responded within a few hours and ordered a new secondary latch. It took about a week for the part to arrive and then mobile service came out to my work and fixed the frunk in 30 minutes total. It was as painless for me as possible—great work! The technician had done a number of these latch replacements already so he was very well-versed in what to do.

I was showing a husband and wife my model 3 at work today, the wife was dropping her bike off for some service. The wife told me the company she works for manufactures the Funk locking mechanism for Tesla locally here in MIchigan. I told her that I've read a lot of people experiencing problems with it, she seemed very surprised. Maybe she will say something to a college and let them know that there are issues with this lock if they don't already know by now.

So... Yesterday a Mobile Ranger came out and ended up replacing both of the Frunk release actuators for me. I watched carefully while he opened the stuck secondary frunk release. It did not require any disassembly of the car. Since my stuck actuator was the secondary release, the frunk lid would open an inch or so. With that space he was able, using a set of 90 degree bent needle-nosed pliers, to manually grab and pull on the release cable. He did this by blind feel, sort of like picking a lock. His pliers were fairly large (larger than any I own). I'm currently searching for a comparable tool myself and intend to practice this technique until I too can replicate it if needed. If it had been the primary actuator I'm told there is an alternate procedure to release that one. He indicated he would show me that procedure on our next appt.

If I find a comparable set of 90 degree bend pliers and am able to replicate this procedure, I will upload it and link to it from this thread.

BTW, he also told me that he has already seen numerous failed frunk release actuators and that the replacement units have been redesigned since. I asked him why he replaced both actuators since only one had failed, he said "So I won't have to come back for the other one."

Takeaway: If you have older actuators, don't put perishables in your frunk.

Not that it's a big deal, but with the Frunk and cowlings out of the way, I did take a few of pics of front end for future project reference. Available here to anyone interested.
My car is an October build, you think I got the redesign or is that something happening like as we speak.

Today my secondary latch was replaced and the ranger used same procedure. Used a 90 degree plier to trip the wire. He told not need to replace my primary latch since the mechanism didn’t changed from original part.

I had the same exact problem wtih my M3, I'm in Cleveland and my service experience was great. I think it took about <1.5 hours and got a free car wash.

Concern: Customer: Front trunk will not open.
Pay Type: Warranty
Corrections: Actuator - Latch - Hood - Primary
Replaced primary hood latch for mechanical malfunction.

My frunk was stuck and I could hear the latch mechanism trying to open. It worked again after I washed my car. I believe problem was adhesion of the rubber hood bumpers to the frame. I sprayed a little silicon lube on the rubber bumper to prevent this from happening again.
