I started out by wanting to add a sub to my SR+ and the more I read, and also because I need all the trunk space, i think i am going to forgot about a sub for now, but rather focus on connecting the rear deck speakers and the front mirror tweeters. If i go this route, what do you all recommend for equipment, ie amp recommendations, don't think i need a line out converter, should i go 4 channel amp or one that can potentially handle a sub later?

Also, if i decide to do this or get a shop to, should i 'future proof' by getting the wiring run for a sub now? just wondering if it is easier while things are taken apart.

Definitely run all the wiring if you can.

If trunk space and sub-trunk space is important to you to carry more item, then maybe just the Alpine KTP-445U is a good choice. With this small amp, you can definitely zip-tide it to the empty subwoofer area behind the right tail-light in SR+ and keep it hidden. I think this hidden space is large enough to hide a big subwoofer amp too (but might need to create some bracket).

Or you can even buy a used OEM subwoofer from the premium trim on ebay and use an aftermarket amp to power it. Should be able to fit this back to the SR trim (not sure if anyone has done yet though).

Now, I am using the 10" shallow pioneer subwoofer with the two amps in the subtrunk. If I create a lid to cover up the top area where the equipment are below, I think I still have about 4" height of room to store any light clothing in this sub-trunk. I'm sure there are some creative people out there that can find a better space setup.

I plan on completing my install today (was waiting on the relay to arrive). I used the Alpine KTP-445U and will be zip-tying it behind the right rear seat bolster. I also ran the woofer wires to the trunk for a future sub install. You may want to consider adding power distribution blocks for power and ground in the trunk area for future easy subwoofer installation.

Finished my install yesterday and I am amazed at the sound I was previously missing. It's really night and day.

One thing I *think* I am hearing is the rear deck and tweeter speakers powered by the KTP-445U may be overpowering the rest of the speakers. The speaker gains on the amp is at the lowest setting, so I can't adjust further. Maybe it's normal and I'm still getting used to having the additional speakers, but just my initial thoughts...

Now I'm already thinking about adding a subwoofer...

Agreed. Or an in depth step by step for dummies. I'm not so bothered about the sub, more interesting in the rear deck and tweeters.
It's probably the easier mod available. Keep reading until you understand, not trying to be a jerk. I read it at least 4-5 times before I finally understood wtf I was looking at.

If you still having issue with the tweeters and speakers overpowering, try this setup that I currently run. Using the LC7i in combo with alpine, I can set the volume really low on speakers.

I have the rear doors speakers splits to 4channel(=8wires) > go to LC7i main+ch1 input>LC7i output main+ch1 go to alpine input for front+rear. Set alpine jumper to 4ch and speaker input(non-rca). LC7i jumper, make sure to NOT to sum signal of main and ch1. Rear speaker set to gain 2o'clock on LC7i and 11o'clock on alpine, tweeter set to gain 9'o'clock on LC7i and 9o'clock on alpine. --Adjust to your liking if needed.

@PLUR thank you and all those before you that have contributed to the audio upgrade discussion. It is extremely helpful to me in deciding which upgrades to attempt on my new SR+. Your work sorting out the speaker wire order and polarity is especially helpful.

One question I haven't seen (or I missed) is ...
How difficult is it to gain access to the rear deck full range speakers behind the rear seats?
I haven't come across a discussion on the details or roadblocks keeping us from upgrading the rear deck speakers. If I can get access I would think that upgrading these would potentially be another significant improvement and less messy to deal with than attempting to do something with the rear door speakers. It is interesting that the underside cavity for the rear deck speakers is not completely open to the trunk. It certainly makes it more difficult to upgrade the speakers as the rear deck grill has to come off to do the job.
I read a comment that there are seat tabs that must be broken to gain access to the deck, but there were no pictures or further discussion to clarify what the consequences are for attempting to get at the rear deck speakers.

Any enlightenment is appreciated.

Flashflooder said it can be done: "
You have to remove the trim on the outside edges of the rear seat backs. In the process, you will destroy one clip per side (they are single use and will break when you pull them). I can't remember, but you may also have to remove the trim from the C-Pillars. Once you've got this trim off, the entire rear shelf simply slides forward.
Relatively easy, if it weren't for the fact that you have to source replacement clips. FWIW, I've removed the side trim and simply jammed it back in place (no clip) without any major issue. "

Might be of relevent from tesla site parts a-b-c post interior trim Trunk_Interior_TI-1770
If anyone has done it or plan to do it, please share the process/pictures :)

@PLUR Thanks.
I've seen one video from Matt Shumaker (Model 3 Rear Seat Removal) where he removed the seatback side trim (right at 6.00 min). He only mentions the snaps, there is no mention of the snaps being damaged.
If I decide to replace the rear deck speaker I will try to document it thoroughly.
Might be the fall before I attempt an audio upgrade project. It isn't fun working in the car during the peak heat and humidity of the summer.

Thank you for the great guide. I'm also looking for advice. Should I go with 5 channel amp or 2 amps (4 channel and mono)? Also, what would you recommend - to build a Custom Fiberglass Subwoofer box or get the Pioneer Shallow-Mount Pre-Loaded Enclosure?

When looking for a 5 channel amp, is there a minimum wattage I should be looking for? Should it be based on the sub wattage?

The 5 channel amp link from page 1 is a good choice. The 4ch alpine is only good if because it is small, but if I were to redo my setup I would go with the 5ch amp since it's cleaner and in similar pricing combined.

The one thing I don't like about the alpine 4ch amp is that the gain knob is not your regular output gain knob, but it is "input gain adjustment" knob. This means that the tweeters or back rear deck speakers might be too loud even at lowest gain knob (if you connect the input signal straight from the speakers). I was able to solve this by reducing the line out signal from the LC7i going to the alpine 4ch.

As for subwoofer box selection, that's up to your music taste and budget, there's a 28page thread that talk about this. In my test, the pioneer with 300 watt RMS had no trouble powering the 12" or 10" shallow sub (I actually had to turn the amp gain way down).

I'm thinking of having a local shop power the rear deck speakers, the tweeters by the mirrors and the A pillar. No subwoofer. If i go this route, what's a good 6 channel amp that I should be looking at?

thanks,
Hey, are you me from this other thread?

[Mods: Hope it's okay to link to another forum??]

If you've tracked down someone local with Tesla experience, let's compare notes! I'll probably also swap out the 3 dash speakers and add a sub, but can't find any local shop that's done a Tesla!
