Kia shows off the EV9 for the first time

After a few teaser videos, we have finally seen the entire Kia EV9 for the first time. The EV9 is the first entrant into the mid-size three-row SUV segment, dominated by the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride for years.

The vehicle is a little boxy, but that is by design. The Kia design team described the look as “refined boxiness” and included a variety of sharp edges that we saw on the original concept car. Even though we have the pictures, Kia did not confirm the exact specs or dimensions of the vehicle.

On the inside, the vehicle has a minimalist design with two 12.3-inch screens. In between, the screen is an HVAC readout. Interestingly, there are not many knobs or buttons, with Kia opting to go mostly touchscreen with the EV9. The infotainment system is also a new generation, but Kia did not detail what features it will have.

The most intriguing part of the launch has to be the backseats. The middle two seats can swivel to face the rear. It is reminiscent of the Chrysler Swivel n Go seats we saw in the mid-2000s. Although this is an excellent feature, it looks a little tight in terms of legroom when the seats are positioned towards the rear.

We are still awaiting official pricing, specs and dimensions, but the EV9 is an intriguing vehicle in a segment where EVs have not ventured.

Wow, they knocked it out of the park. Only question that remains (and arguably the most important one), what’s the range?

....if only the puppy fit in my garage. 😕

Apparently, this is built on the same E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, etc. Since it's a larger vehicle, I would expect that it has less range than an EV6, which gets 252-282 miles in AWD big-battery versions.

Unless they've actually massaged the platform and provide a bigger battery.

Def doesn't look very aerodynamic, which means they'll actually try to sell it with low 200mi range (~220s) or they worked their magic and made the E-GMP platform configurable for larger battery capacity.

I need to amend: if the puppy fit in my garage AND had > 300 mile range. Two hundred for a 'real' SUV, nope.

I doubt it would have had 300mi, but low 200s won't cut it when considering we don't all live in California and will need to use hit for a good portion of the year. Personally, it'd need to be 250+ to be a viable option. Even at 250, the price better be less than a Y LR. Get it to 280+ and I'd pay around the Y. If they hit the "magical" 300+ then it'd be a game changer.

Even now, there's not many sedans that get 300mi, let alone an SUV, and one with a 3rd row at that... shoot that sounds like a magical unicorn

I'll stick with my semi SUV MYLR's 330 range on a full charge. Plus, doubt that monster would fit in my garage.

It appears they've done exactly that.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered with either a 58kWh (220 miles) or 77.4kWh battery (266 AWD, 303 RWD miles)

The EV9 comes with either a 76.1 kWh or 99.8 kWh battery.
They're saying 541km (336 miles) for the long-range RWD variant, but that's probably WLTP instead of EPA.
