Can be ordered at the same time as the car for $1000 USD. If you have a Y and want one call Tesla service and see if they offer a retrofit. Another option is to wait for the more affordable EcoHitch from Torklift Central which is what I have on my Model 3
How much does this impact how far you can drive? Does Tesla provide anything that we can better understand how far you can travel with a max towing load?
I have a reservation for performance Y made a few months ago. Still waiting to hear anything about delivery, next steps, etc.
Will I be able to add the tow hitch option at time of finalizing things or do I have to go in and edit my order/configuration? And will doing so move back my delivery time?

While I don't want a tow hitch, if I did, I would definitely call to add to my existing order to hopefully avoid loosing my $3,000 discount ordering early!
So glad that Tesla Model Y is coming out with the tow hitch. A must for our family and our bikes. If I order the tow package do I get to decide the receiver size? (1-1/4" vs. 2"). I know it's one extra part number for Tesla to stock, but hopefully they could manage that for $1000 up-charge. I still feel like Tesla's communication could be better in the configurator so that we don't have to ask these questions to the sales people who are already overworked.
I'd prefer the 2" as I have that on my Subaru Outback and so I wouldn't have to deal with an adapter. Adapter's tend to lower tongue weight capacity by 50%.
Alternatively, I guess we find out how hard it is to do an aftermarket solution and find out if the Ecohitch towing capacity is the same as that on the Model 3 (300 tongue/2000lbs towing).
You don't ever get to "choose" the size of the receiver. It is dictated by towing capacity. Over a certain amount it will be 2", less and it will be the smaller size.
On the most recent DAEriK Youtube Live show they stated they heard from Tesla that the hitch will be retrofittable to "some" model Y's and that it will likely cost more than the build-to-order price. This link jumps to the point they start to talk about it:
So the Tesla Delivery Support Specialist got back to me and it looks like it comes with a 2" receiver and it seems that it is still something done at the Service Center rather than the factory. We are asking them to get it done before we take delivery. The price is better if you order it with the car than if you order it later. $1000 vs. $1200 later. This was the reply I got after they talked with the Service Center confirming the size of the receiver.
"The Model Y are now configurable with a 2” hitch receiver for accessory racks and towing. Model Y is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs – enough for lightweight camper trailers, small boats, and jet skis. Also, the Model Y has the input for a 7-pin wiring harness for trailer lighting and braking. "
It's expected that Tesla would do the wiring with the install of the tow hitch. Does Tesla or Ecohitch sell a wiring harness part so you can make the Ecohitch install look basically the same?
I like the convenience of the wiring having a weather sealed cover and external to the car so that you don't have to slam the wiring down on the hatch of the Model Y.
Since the Y has a connector for the 7-pin hidden in the rear of every vehicle, does anyone know if a third party is working on the equivalent of the Tesla 7-pin wiring adapter? I'd be much more tempted to go with an EcoHitch if I knew I could get a simple-to-attach 7-pin connector.
Also, the kit that Trevor mentioned won't activate the towing mode of the Y, correct?
New article on Electrek stating the towing capacity is lowest on the 20" wheels. From motor torque perspective, 21" should have the lowest capacity so maybe it's just the strength of the 20" rims?
Also, does tow mode still allow you to use some auto pilot function?
Also, Tesla needs to differentiate modes when you are towing or you need to be towed.

Bought a Model Y hitch on June 30, still shows as “On Route to service center“.
Does anybody know when these will be available? (Would be great if it came in before the end of the summer). I have an appointment for August 3rd so would love to get the hitch too.

I ordered last week and haven't heard anything either I just bought an E bike and really want to get on the road with it. I did see a model Y in pearl with a tow hitch and very envious! Lol
I picked up my model Y in March prior to it being available at delivery. I ordered the tow hitch Last week but have not received any information about how long it will take. Does anyone know how long it’s taking? I’m in San Francisco.
I made an appointment and was contacted by text from the service center the next day (no email was sent to me per the test the website). I am now scheduled to have it installed August 13
Thanks for the suggestion, seems obvious to do now. Put in for a service appointment myself scheduled two weeks from now. I put it in as a mobile service which I'm pretty sure is going to get bounced back to a service center visit but so far has been canceled either because they don't actually have the tow hitch parts in stock or have to do it on a lift at a service center. I'll update everyone once it gets installed, how it went, etc.👍
To follow up I got the service estimate on the upcoming tow package installaction and they added an installation charge so I declined the estimate. I says right in the description, "Price includes shipping and installation and ships to your preferred Service Center." 👎 We'll see.
To follow up again-again😀 my service appointment was kept and the issue about the installation charge was cleared up, I was charged zero $, so total cost was the original $1200+tax. Dropped car off at Tyson's Corner service center this morning, estimated time to finish was 48-72 hours and it was done by 5PM😂😂. Seems like they did a great job. Haven't had the time to see what they mean by "tow mode software." We'll see, only have a hitch-mount Bike rack at the moment but the world is my oyster now that I can tow things!
