I rented a Model 3 from Hertz. I had been using it for a week. Hundreds of miles on it. I was the first renter of that car. Had 4 miles on the odometer when I picked it up.

A week later, I need to take my family to the airport 50 miles away, go to put the car in drive and a bunch of error codes are displayed and the car went no where. I was not attempting to charge. It was parked in a parking lot.

Errors were:
BMS_a107 Unable to charge
BMS_a105 Vehicle may not restart
BMS_a098 Unable to charge
BMS_a050 Unable to charge

Does anyone have any idea what went wrong with this car?

Took 5 hours for Hertz to get me a replacement. My family took a Lyft to the airport.

It either has a bad 12v battery, or the PCS is not charging the 12v battery for some reason. Since it’s from Hertz I would vote bad 12v battery - because they do tend to let their cars sit for long periods of time.

I thought tesla had switched 12v batteries to lithium ion and dead 12v batteries were a thing of the past. I had been driving the car around for a week so if it had been sitting around before, it had not been for the last week.
Worried because at the time I was considering buying one.
Since then I came back home and did take delivery of a RWD M3 just like it except for white interior. Hope it doesn’t happen to my car. We haven’t been stranded by an ICE car in many many years.

It might happen to your car, but it won't be as catastrophic as the error messages say. I actually had even more errors than that when my 12v died (including "Vehicle may shut down unexpectedly"), and I still managed to make 2 stops before going to the Tesla Service Center to have it replaced.

The reason that happens is that batteries behave strangely when they go bad, so that most electronic sensors can't fully zero in on what the problem is. The voltage drops, but then sometimes they actually intermittently short internally or behave like a resistor on the 12 volt bus. Then you get strange errors like the ones you saw - the extra ones I got might have been because it was shorting internally, and was cutting off 12 volts entirely from time to time.

If I replace my battery, would it be Lithium Ion or are then not compatible with my 2020 MX? TIA
