New York City gets green light to purchase up to 250 Tesla Model 3s for NYPD

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has been given the go ahead to purchase up to 250 Tesla Model 3s to add to its fleet of police cruisers.

The $12.36 million sole source contract was first discovered earlier this month, and was set to be discussed at a public hearing on December 16.

There was no announcement after that meeting, but on December 22 the Mayor of New York announced a massive $420 million investment into EVs and green infrastructure.

Now the city has confirmed part of that money will go towards a fleet of Model 3 cruisers, as well as a fleet of Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs for law enforcement and emergency response use.

In a press release this morning, Citywide Administrative Services announced the order for 184 Mach-Es.

The electric SUVs are slated for use by the New York Police Department (NYPD), the New York City Sheriff's Office, the Department of Correction, and others, and are expected to arrive by June 30, 2022.

Although not included in the announcement, and despite reports the Ford beat out Tesla for the deal, the city has also approved the $12.36 million purchase for up to 250 Tesla Model 3s.

Citywide Administrative Services confirmed the approval to Drive Tesla this morning, saying more details about the deal will be coming soon.

The NYPD actually already has at least two Model 3 police cruisers. They joined the Highway Patrol division earlier this year, and have recently been spotted performing traffic stops on the streets on New York City, which will become a much more common sight in the months and years to come.
