Polestar has announced today they will be adding Apple CarPlay to their fleet of Polestar 2 sedans through a free over-the-air (OTA) software update.

With the update Polestar owners will be able to connect their iPhone and mirror the device’s screen on the in-car 11″ display. Once connected they will be able to change music, use iPhone apps, and also use Siri through the infotainment system.

The most fun part about driving a Polestar is driving it, but there's more to it. Polestar’s decision to add Apple CarPlay is an interesting one considering their infotainment system is powered by rival Android, with Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store built in.

The automaker is committed to the change, already announcing they will be part of the next-generation CarPlay which will control a vehicle’s functions and take over multiple displays with Apple’s signature design language.

Despite repeated requests from owners, Tesla has yet to adding Apple CarPlay or even Apple Music to their vehicles. In an interview with Tesla Owners Silicon Valley released earlier today, Musk said that he personally subscribes to Apple Music, but streams it through the vehicle’s Bluetooth connection.

Musk did however say he would look into increase the bitrate to improve sound quality when streaming any music over Bluetooth.

Think if CarPlay is going to ever come out to a Tesla, it'd require the Ryzen based MCU, if not a newer version. Intel based MCUs are just too slow to be able to handle CarPlay onto of everything else running on it.
