Range improvements

I bought my M3 in 2018. Started with 310 miles of range. I believe that got bumped up a bit soon after I bought it but let’s stick to 310. Seeing 2025 AWD is at 346. This is a 12% improvement over 7 years.

Seems like a surprisingly modest / weak improvement. No?

That works out to an ~1.6% improvement per year (compounded). Am I the only one surprised at the slow pace of improvements?

Any bigger / faster improvement expected in next 2 or 3 years?

Good point on price. Inflation adjusted prices are much lower today vs what I paid in 2018.

Regarding need - I disagree … I believe a segment of the population is used to seeing 400+ mile range estimates in their ICE vehicle and still want more flexibility for road trips. Count me as one of them. Every so often trip planning gets tricky as I need to consider where the faster chargers are. Some added range will reduce the frequency of this.

All is good with my gentle reminder of being courteous to our female companions. Especially considering the 2-3x increased density of SuperChargers and fast DC chargers.

In 2019, SuperChargers between Huntsville AL and Coffeyville KS had one gap and two severe diversions from a straight path. So I found adequate L2 charging spots to add enough range to span the gap. After my Mom passed, it was much easier even the the battery range was down from 240 to 220 miles.

The replacement battery is running about 190 miles but all of my segments to Las Vegas, 1,800 miles, are about 120-140 miles, piece of cake. In fact, I no longer seek an overnight in a motel with chargers. A cheap motel within a mile or two of a SuperCharger or CCS-1 fast DC charger works fine and saves money. Brief charge, less than 5 minutes, before check-in.

My typical segments run 1.5-2.5 hours with just the first of the day using overnight charging running about 3 hours:
  • Stop at 24x7 bathroom and snack shack close to SuperCharger.
  • Eat snack, cat nap, and/or walk dogs while 10-20 minutes to charge.
  • On the road again, refreshed and ready.
