Storing Model Y

Last Spring, I posted a question about leaving my Model Y in storage and not plugged in for 2 1/2 months and whether the battery would stay charged enough to drive when I retrieved the car. Apparently, folks had not done this and I did not receive any helpful responses.

I am happy to report that I took the car out of storage yesterday and it had 91% left. It was stored in a 10x20 standard unit w/o climate control, so it regularly was in 90+ F temps. I started with 99% and connected once a week to check the battery status.

I wouldn't say the responses were unhelpful. You simply chose your own route, which is fine.

Do consider though, that you left an almost full battery to sit until the charge level dropped of its own accord. Most EV people will tell that is not beneficial for battery longevity.

Hopefully, yours is a counterexample of it being okay to leave the battery sitting at a high level of charge. Please let us know when you're able to assess battery health. Thanks.

Oof. That poor battery! Long-term storage at that high of a charge likely added many more than 2-1/2 months' worth of degradation.

Ideal storage (which I would have told you about if I saw your thread, but I don't remember it) is to charge to somewhere between 50% and 80%, and leave it plugged into at least a 120 volt outlet if you can. If you can't leave it plugged in, turn the car off using the option in the regular settings, or if you want to keep it active to check on it, enable Service Mode (look up how on Youtube) to disable most battery draining systems, and minimize battery drain.
