The popularity of the Tesla Model 3 does not show any sign of waning soon as Fiat Group World reports that the EV was among the top 10 best-selling cars in 2021.

In another proof that electric vehicles have finally gone mainstream, an EV was among the top ten best-selling cars last year. The honor goes to the Tesla Model 3. The result is backed by car sales data from 106 markets globally, representing 99.32 percent of total sales.

The EV sedan ranked number nine and was the only purely electric car on the list. It moved 508,000 units, representing a 40 percent increase over 2020 when the pandemic was at its height.

The Tesla Model 3 came ahead of models from Nissan, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ram, Volkswagen, etc. It notably outsold the Chinese Wuling Hongguang Mini EV that brought EV minis to the spotlight in the Asian country due to its low price.

The top ten list is topped by the usual suspects; Toyota RAV4 in first position selling 1,132,000 units, followed by the Toyota Corolla (1,104,000), Honda CR-V (903,000), Nissan Sentra (693,000), Toyota Camry (681,000), etc. The Honda Accord rounds out the top ten with 481,000 units sold.

top-110-1 The Tesla Model Y made it into the top 20, occupying the 19th position with sales of 392,000 units. It is projected to overtake the Model Y this year, meaning its position in the top ten for 2022 is all but assured.

Tesla sold more than 930,000 cars last year, with the bulk split between the Model 3 and Model Y. The company plans to deliver 1.5 million units in 2022. It recently opened two new Giga Factories in Texas (the new headquarters) and Berlin, Germany. It continues to produce cars in China, where there are rumors that it would expand, and Fremont in California.
