Tesla has officially announced plans to spend $3.6 billion to expand their presence in Nevada with the construction of two new factories 0 one for 4680 cell production and the other for high-volume Semi production.

In a blog post on the automaker’s website, Tesla confirmed the project that we first reported on last night after Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo revealed the investment during his 2023 State of the Union Address.

According to Tesla the $3.6 billion investment will be fund the construction of a 4680 cell factory with an annual capacity of 100 Gigawatt hours (GWh). Tesla says this is enough cells for 2 million light duty vehicles annually.

The investment will also go towards the construction of a “high-volume” Semi factory. Tesla did not say how many of the class 8 electric trucks would be able to be built at the factory, but it has previously been stated they have a goal to produce 50,000 per year by 2024.

Tesla did not say when the project will begin, or when either factory is scheduled to start production, but did share a rendering of what the facility will look like when complete. According to Tesla it will have 4 million square feet of production floor space and will be run by a team of over 3,000 employees.

For comparison, Tesla’s existing Giga Nevada factory covers 5.4 million square feet and has an annual battery production capacity of 35GWh.

Along with the announcement, Tesla also shared how productive Giga Nevada has been for Tesla since it opened the $3.5 billion (2014 dollars) factory.

  • 7.3 billion battery cells (37 GWh+ annually)
  • 1.5 million battery packs
  • 3.6 million drive units
  • 1 million energy modules (14 GWh+ total)

Very impressive output by these factories. Scary when you realize those capacities/outputs are a mere drop in the bucket of what’s needed for the planet to go 100% electric.

Building mass production facilities appears to be a core strength of Elon…no one seems to do it as well or as quickly. One can only imagine what could have been had $44billion gone into that world instead of the Twitter-ship. Over twelve times the cost of TWO incredible factories…blows my mind.

It wasn't completely clear when the announcements were made, but these new "factories" will be co-located with the current Sparks factory.
Giga Nevada will finally start to look like the original renderings.
