If you go back to the email you got after making the reservation, it states that reservations are not transferable.

You have 2 options:
1) Cancel the order for. $1,000 refund
2) Buy the car and resell it after taking delivery
The early adopters always pave the way for future buyers. Waiting to buy a Model 3 will ultimately get a higher quality car with more options. I would not think of the lost reservation as a waste :)

If you go back to my OP, I know it's non-transferable. I'm also aware that I can sell it. I'm looking for non-taxable options. Looks like there are none.
Reading comprehension failure :(

So my brother of another mother (yes literally, same dad) went with the X and his wife put the smack down on him getting the 3 also. He said I could have his reservation since he was an X owner it would move it up the line. Seeing that "Your Reservation is not transferable or assignable to another party without the prior written approval of Tesla." I called them to explain the situation. I was told my brother should configure and make the $2500 payment. Then when the sales associate called he could transfer the car at that time. I asked what was required and he only said the sales associate would cover that. Seems they would offer something written per their own verbiage. So now we're nervous since the $2500 isn't refundable and we're not a "traditional family". We never lived in the same home. I'm in no hurry as I want the white interior. But after the bump of an entire quarter I would feel safer having the option if it appears the white interior could cost me $7500. If in my shoes what would you do at this point?

@Steam613 In your shoes, I would take the offer, take the black interior and take the joy of finally getting the car I've been obsessing over for 2 years.

More seriously, you shouldn't have any problem with the transfer. It's been done before...

As soon as the $2,500 is paid, the car is confirmed. Next step is to complete details about the buyer. He'll be able to put your information in for everything (title of the car, financing, delivery location, etc.). You take the car, it's yours 100% all the way. After delivery you'll email servicehelpna@tesla.com and request that the car be transferred from your brothers accounting to "your account". Cc your brother at this email address registered with Tesla. Ask him to Reply All confirming the transfer is approved from his perspective. Tesla will complete in 3-5 business days.

DONE!

So then . . . it *is* possible and fairly straightforward to step in the shoes of an invitee and get the M3 that way?? I have a friend who reserved a M3, then decided the S was better for him and got one. As expected, his place in line for the M3 was accelerated and he got an invite last week.

He's happy with the S, and isn't going to get the 3, and so he offered his position to me (for no fee - he's just giving his position to me). I told him I didn't think it was possible, as we aren't related and a close relation seems to be the only exception for a transfer.

But now I see . . . . that it sounds like they don't really require "proof" of relation, and you just add one's own details in the buyer section, and the car is "yours" (mine, as it were, and then I'd just use my funds to buy it, I suppose).

I'm probably missing something, but if not, I'd love to relieve my friend's "burden" of his un-usable 3 invite . . .

Truth be told I don't really know the answer as my case was a true direct family relationship.

Right, makes sense. I read elsewhere that two siblings - legitimate ones, one with an invite and another that didn't have it - "merged" their two reservation accounts, which had the effect of enabling the non-invite sibling to utilize the account with the invite to order/config his 3.

I'm not interested in doing this fraudulently and so will just wait for my time to come, but I wonder how they verify relationship status. Brothers and sisters don't always have the same last names - same, even more so, if the siblings are in-laws or otherwise do not have the same last names though legitimately related. They must have some way of checking; otherwise they'd be getting a bunch of "siblings" or "parent/childs" looking to merge accounts, effectively transferring reservation priorities and doing an end run around the rules. . . .

I do believe it's mostly an honor system, but that's until you try and it backfires :)

I have a brother in California who owns an X and has no plans for a 3.
I have a 3/31 online reservation for a 3 but lives in Texas (too far from a Tesla store to line up on 3/31).
Original window for delivery was December now it is April to June (maybe).
My last car was stolen during Hurricane Harvey, so I've been sharing my kid's car for the last four months.
I keep hoping that my 3 will be here soon, so have been putting off buying a new car.
I am even seriously considering jumping ship for the Jag if it was available today.

Question is can I merge my Tesla account with my brother's and purchase the 3 under my name?
Is it easier for him to place an order on his account and change the information later?
Can I have it deliver to Texas rather than picking it up in California?
And is there any tax consequences (ie. California sales tax versus Texas sales tax)?

Thanks for any help,
CJ

Basically you would transfer your 3/31 reservation to your brother. It would likely get invited to configure with the next batch of invites after that transfer goes through. From there you order the car and give the $2,500 deposit. It will ask you for the registration name (you'll enter your name, not your brother's name). Then it will ask for your delivery zip code (again you enter yours and not your brothers). That's basically it. The car will be 100% yours. Not tax issues or any other issues besides what is a major delay in getting the car transferred back to your Tesla account. It will be stuck under your brother's account for likely the better part of 2 months (I'm still 5 weeks past delivery and the car isn't in my account yet).

@SoFlaModel3,
Would it be faster to place another reservation in his account and ask for a refund on my account? Can I pay the $1000 and the $2500 deposits using my credit card?
Thanks so much for the help.
CJ

Potentially faster that route, but then you have an extra $1,000 floating around. Yes both fees can be on your card though without issue as that's how my transaction went down. My parents were not inconvenienced at all as part of the deal.

Resurrecting a dead thread to ask if anyone has recently used a family member’s reservation to purchase a Model 3? I used my brother-in-law’s rez but the car is in MY name. The VIN email, the ISA phone call, etc., all came directly to me. But upon delivery, for my phone to work as a key, I had to use his account (and continue to do so). The DS said this used to be a manual process but is now automated and should only take “a few days” (yeah, right) for it to hit my account. Anybody have experience with this lately?

These were the steps i did to get transfer

1. Send in a request to have transfer (you will probably not get a reply)
servicehelpna@tesla.com
2. Call Tesla and they will look into request
(877) 798-3752
3. She found emails and sent in request said it will take 1-2 weeks to transfer
4 She setup phone as key so you can start using your phone with your account
5 4 days later car was in my account

See this thread as well... it seemed to pick up where this thread left off. Seems like ownership transfers started to pick up in mid-to-late April with the addition of an internal tool to allow more people within Tesla to perform the transfer.

What was the timeframe between 1 and 2? In other words, how long do I wait to call after emailing? I think my DS sent an email or something when I took delivery Monday. Therefore, should I skip step 1 and move along to step 2?

It should be fast now as the floodgates have definitely opened whereas I waited a good 10 weeks.

Call them now, they can at least get the transfer started.and you can start using your phone.
