Is it legal to sell license plates in California?

 

One does not sell the actual physical plate (at least not one that can be swapped to another car) , but rather the rights to the text or number(s) on said plate.

 

Again, NOT the actual physical plate. People can reserve the right, for an annual fee, to a set of numbers/letters to go on a plate without actually putting them on a plate and assigning it to a vehicle / VIN. One takes documentation to the DMV to transfer the plate number rights.

 

It’s just a paperwork thing to transfer it. You don’t have to meetup or anything.

My question is, when was it last registered? If it was last done 10 years ago, it’s already available for anyone to snag.

I’ll keep my veteran tags, though. Gotten me out of more than a couple tickets. 😉🫡
