VW Zwickau assembly plant is fully transformed as ID.5 begins production

Volkswagen's transition of the Zwickau assembly plant is officially complete. The German-automaker made the announcement along with news that they are producing the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX in the Zwickau assembly plant.

Last November, the plant started to retool and transform into an EV assembly plant.

This is the first large-scale production plant transformation from combustion engines to electric under the same owner. The group will produce six EV models from the Volkswagen, Audi and CUPRA brands.

VW hopes to build more than 180,000 vehicles at the location this year alone.

However, the annual output could be as many as 300,000 vehicles.

The factory's transformation cost 1.2 billion euros and focused on enhancements and expansions. The retooled factory includes Industry 4.0 robots, driverless transportation systems, and creating future-proof jobs for the region.

In addition, the factory is carbon-neutral and powered by 100 per cent green energy.

The factory will produce:

  • Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5
  • Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron
  • CUPRA Born

We should note that this is not the first transition from a combustion factory to an EV factory.

Tesla transformed their Fremont facility to an EV plant after they purchased the plant from Toyota.

Audi also converted their smaller plant in Brussels to a pure EV plant.
