AutoPilot went crazy trying to steer me into traffic or off the road, fought me for control, going 75 MPH on I-495, super scary, finally wrested control, pulled over in a sweat, several other cars pulled off to see what the heck was going on; WTF?!? - 2017 75D Model S

I see this is your first post. Was it also your first drive? Looking for reasons you would have to "fight for control" ... even if you tapped the brake or moved the steering wheel? Need some more info ...
sorry for the delay, I'm not a regular to forums; I've been driving the MS since 3/2017, with it sometimes (rarely) trying to veer off the road on autopilot for no apparent reason, but it always easily relinquished control and let me take over with only light force on the wheel. Back in Feb it would not; very strong resistance force on wheel, and I had to turn it really hard to turn car back onto the road. Autopilot did not disengage, but tried to correct, only too late, and thus going into the next lane, when I would wrestle the wheel the other way, and then it would overcorrect onto the shoulder. This jerking back and forth 'fishtailing' happened about 8 times, hard to say, I was so freaked out. I was surrounded by cars at high speed, could not break or press horn, just trying to wrestle the wheel for control. The basic problem was that autopilot would not disengage, apparently still trying to correct direction, only not fast enough to keep the car in the lane. I still love the car, but am super cautious about using autopilot.

I have never had AP, ESP or FSD be not able to brake or to not be able to disengage autosteer with only sight steering wheel pressure to disengage. I've seen it try to run into on-coming traffic lanes, make SHARP turns in the middle of intersections but I was ALWAYS able to cancel it easily.

Your car has demons. Pour a thick circle of salt around it where it's parked. Call a priest.

Good point. Given that this is the only report we've seen of a Tesla overpowering the steering of a vehicle, it seems more likely that the edge of the payment was the actual cause.

And to be clear - I'm only talking about AP overpowering your steering input. AP can make bad decisions. If you didn't catch it before it went over the edge of the pavement, then tramlining could make it very difficult to steer the vehicle back into the lane.

The weird thing that’s happened to me using auto pilot is that a few times, my 2018 Tesla S 100D has randomly braked, and I mean braked hard, while driving on the interstate, even when there were no other vehicles near me.
I paid for FSD when it was $5000, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it.

How do you use FSD versus auto pilot?
I never take my hands off the wheel. I just don’t trust a large machine moving at a high rate of speed on its own.

That is referred to as phantom braking. It is well known and often discussed. My personal experience is that it used to be bad (2018, 2019 time frame) but the only thing that very occasionally happens to me now is what I call phantom slowdowns of a few mph.

How do you use FSD versus auto pilot?
You have to select FSD Beta in the autopilot menu. Then a double click of the stalk will activate FSD instead of autopilot (lane keeping).

Did you never use old fashioned cruise control? In retrospect that is quite dangerous, continuing at a constant speed in all situations. I am very, very comfortable with adaptive cruise control. And lane keeping makes it even better.

hen forces the question:
When FSD-ß-ß does what some humans call "Crazy-Sh1t" does FSD-ß-ß consider that an error/ if not, then there will be no error logs to view.

OTOH does FSD-ß-ß log EVERY movement, decision and action / reaction whether considered an error or not? THAT would be useful data, although LOTS of stuff to sort through.

I find this thread very interesting as I am new to the world of Tesla and currently shopping for a used Model S. A friend has a 2017 75D and says I want at least a HW 2.5 car. The couple that I have been interested in are HW 1.0 cars. I'm used to Adaptive Cruise Control on my last two Cadillacs, and that is just fine with me.

It depends what you need. A Model S with HW 1.0 will be pretty basic from a modern EV standpoint but if that's all you need, go for it - but keep a big repair budget, because those models have had suddenly dying MCU's and main battery issues. The HW 2.5 ones don't have either of those.

The HW 1.0 cars are 7 years old and older. Just be aware you would be past or nearing the end of the battery warranty. In addition to autopilot, you are dealing with a much older car. While Tesla has kept the outside of the model S with minimal changes, they are constantly evolving many parts of the car that may not be as evident. If you do go with that old of a car, a few suggestions:
  • Make sure it has the options you want. Many features were alacarte options back then.
  • Make sure it has had the infotainment (MCU2) upgrade, or budget to get it done. This is true for any model S manufactured before March 2018.
Regarding autopilot, my opinion is in synch with your friend’s advice to get at least a HW 2.5. FSD doesn’t add much to the value on the used market, so I would definitely want it, or at least Enhanced Autopilot. I find autopilot on highways to be extremely good. FSD on city streets is hit or miss and I think people’s opinions on it is largely shaped by their expectations.

those models have had suddenly dying MCU's and main battery issues. The HW 2.5 ones don't have either of those.
I am not aware of any demarcation in failure rates of MCUs and batteries with HW2.5. Those things are totally separate from the autopilot hardware.

The draw for me to the older cars has been free unlimited supercharging and free unlimited connectivity.
Free unlimited supercharging that is transferable requires that the car was originally ordered by January 2017 and delivered by March 2017.

Free premium connectivity (which is transferable) requires the new car was ordered by June 30, 2018, or Tesla included it on used cars up to January 2020.

If Tesla has ever re-owned the cars after these times, they have probably removed the features or at least the transferability.

I have a 2017 model X with free supercharging (not transferable) and free premium connectivity. While I very much like these features, I don’t think I would sacrifice shopping for a car old enough to get them.

Paying close to $6 per gallon for the premium fuel that my Cadillac XTS V-Sport Platinum requires is leaving a seriously bad taste in my mouth. Driving a Model S for free is very enticing. Besides the VERY tempting 2015 S85D that is listed here, I am also considering a 2019 Raven. I'm sure the Raven is the better choice. Especially for an additional $7500...

An additional $7500? TAKE IT AND RUN before the seller realizes what a good deal that is. Don't come back here without it.
