I am looking for some help with this problem... I bought my 2021 Tesla Y Dual Motor with aprx. 12,000 miles on it 12/30/2023 from the Tesla used car division… I have put about 2,500 miles on it and I have a very annoying rattle coming from the rear of the car… It happens when I drive on an uneven road… And it's constant… I've checked everything and cannot find it… When I went to the Tesla dealer in Monterey California, they told me that it was not covered under Tesla’s warranty… And they would charge me a minimum of $240 to start the diagnosis process and then charge me from there to find it… That it could run into the thousands to find and fix it… after I took the service advisor and mechanic out for a test drive they both acknowledged hearing it and they felt that it was an interior rattle… The cars history shows it has never been involved in an accident that has been reported… Do I have any recourse in trying to solve this rattle/noise problem? One of the frustrating procedures in buying a used Tesla from Tesla is that you are unable to view or drive the car prior to buying the car… That they certify that the car is free from defects… And you pay for the car upfront… Then if you decide that you don't want to accept the car then they keep a $500 deposit from you… I believe that the rattle/noise was there when I bought the car… And Tesla should be responsible for fixing it… But the service advisor in Monterey wasn't in agreement… What are your thoughts? And what are my recourses?

Thanks for your reply.... Sadly this service advisor wasn't the most accommodating or sympathetic guy... He mentioned that Tesla's warranty for rattle and nosies had expired? that it was valid only for 1 year and certain number of miles and they my car no longer was covered... he said that if it was found to be a defective part that Tesla would cover the cost of the repair... but if not then I would be liable? I asked if it might be a lose clip in the car would that be covered by Tesla? he said no... unless the clip was broken? the car has no mention of any previous repairs in the history that I was shown... When I first picked up the car, there was a loud creaking noise under acceleration or breaking… Also, when I was pulling at an angle out of a driveway, and the chassis of the car would torque, I would hear a loud creaking noise… I took it to Tesla and they acknowledged the sound… And fixed it… Said it had something to do in the subframe… I didn't hear this latest noise until I drive on a uneven road surface… Then it's a constant rattle like a plate of dishes in a mild earthquake.

Thanks… I’ve checked with the seats laid flat or up.. checked hubcaps.. found that the license plate frame was loose and thought that I had solved it.. but sadly it wasn’t it.. the service advisor thought that it was coming from inside the rear of the car? Might have to start pulling the plastic panels off? But I just don’t want to void the warranty by messing something up myself in the search for the rattle..

Thanks for your help... I will try riding in the back seat and do my best to pinpoint the area that the sound is coming from... then go from there.. 2 other issues with the car is that the drivers side rear door needs A LOT more force to close and latch the door than any of the other doors... I am constantly finding the door 1/2 closed/latched unless I slam it shut... Tesla service said that the striker and latch are functioning properly ... that it might be the seal? on a 2021 model car sold in December of 2020? anyways the say there is nothing that they can do... and the last issue is the seat backs folding forward with the buttons... when I use the buttons in the cargo area to lower the seat backs I hear a motor or solenoid working... but nothing happens? the seats don't move forward... but they work fine manually... not a huge issue... the door and the rattle are the things that bother me...

yahoo!!!

I found it and fixed it!

it was the subwoofer amplifier mounting bracket that was making the rattle noise..

I was able to get to it pretty easily.. just needed to be uber careful of not breaking the little plastic body panel clips..

here is what it was...

and the service manual info..

my noise wasn't related to the subwoofer playing music.. it was the mounting bracket for the subwoofer amplifier that was the culprit.. and tightening the 10mm bolts and nuts didn't cure the noise... I had to add some felt tape between the metal bracket and the body panel to get rid of the noise.

Really sad that the Tesla Service manager I went to see for the noise coming from the rear of the car (subwoofer mounting bracket) in Monterey Ca was so aggressively unhelpful and unwilling to even begin to help me... basically told me to F off.. he really soured my feelings on Tesla service...
