Ok, so what good is a head's up display that you can only see when outside the car? Look closely at the picture.
At face value that is very hard to believe. The difference is a manual crank vs. electric motors, electric switches, necessary wiring harnesses, fusing, up/down limit sensors, blockage sensitivity, plus whatever software might be involved. Very hard to believe all that could be remotely less expensive than a set of hand cranks. I would posit a more compelling reason for the demise of manual windows is their undesirability today.
If you only build a car with hand cranks, then yes, it will be cheaper to manufacturer. But very few people will buy such a vehicle nowadays.
My brother purchased an Ioniq 5 in NY and I helped him on the drive home back to Florida. They almost bought a Tesla instead of the Ioniq because when his wife adjusted how she liked to sit while driving, the speed is blocked. They only went with it after they learned about the heads-up display. I had the same problem driving the Ioniq and my eyes and brain did not get along with the HUD. Apparently this is a known issue for some people. So I drove it without seeing the speed unless I leaned over to see it.
I had to replace the glass over the front of my M3 after a rock chipped and cracked it while driving home after taking delivery of it 2 hours prior. $1,150.00 and not covered by insurance.
combined with clear days happens 3/4 of the year.
It's a projected image on a glass you can see and look through while driving.
I really liked the 5, it's just a cost thing to me. No tax break etc. Maybe look at the Chevys when it comes out after a few years to make sure they didn't muck up again.
It may require you to refocus your eyes every time you glance at it. It gives some people headaches and some people get nauseous. So its not for everyone. I found it uncomfortable to use the one in the Ioniq 5, so I just put up with not being able to see the speed on the dashboard unless I tilted my head to see it.
The HUDs that do it right, focus the information way out in front of you.
It displays on the windshield.
My brother had no problem at all using the HUD. Maybe rent one and drive it for a day to see how it effects you. Everyone will have a different reaction to using it.
High quality HUDs reflect off the window, but they use optics technology to project well out in front of the car. You "see" it floating in the air, maybe 10 feet in front of you. This keeps you from having to change focus.
Presently we drive a 2021 Tesla 3 on a lease. Prior to the Tesla we drove two BMW 5 Series with HUD. The one thing my wife misses in the Tesla is the HUD. Also, this Tesla is so noisy on the highway, the radio is useless. Glad our lease will be over early next year. I will be looking for another EV but with more road noise isolation and better ride than the Tesla.
The new Tesla added double pain glass. Try a new model 3 or Y out, less noise and a softer suspension. Its suspension not up to a BMW 5 though.
My insurance covered the roof glass panel on my 3 that I replaced bc of a chip in the glass. Depends on the company I guess. We routinely have temps 95⁰F-100⁰ during summer (and late spring and fall!) and my car sits on the driveway and has for the 5+ years I've owned it (I have used a reflective sun visor on the windshield since the beginning). I don't find it any hotter in the interior than my husband's gas car. I'd take an insulated metal roof over the glass roof that radiates waves of heat into the interior making the a/c pretty much worthless. I will probably wrap the glass before moving back out west later this year where triple digit temps
