HV battery failure

My 2021 Tesla Model Y would not charge (September 2025). Turns out that the High Voltage battery (main battery) had a cell that went out. This happened at 86k miles and under warranty. Tesla service team was great and provided a loaner. Problem I have, or question, is that a refurbished battery was installed and its max is 272 miles. I had 300 mile capacity when the HV failure happened. This seems wrong. Additionally, the warranty does not restart. So now i have a very limited warranty on a refurbished battery. Does not seem proper or good business

Tesla's warranty states:

If your Battery or Drive Unit requires warranty repair, Tesla will repair the unit, or replace it with a new, reconditioned or re-manufactured part at the sole discretion of Tesla. The warranty replacement may not restore the vehicle to a "like new" condition, but when replacing a Battery, Tesla will ensure that the energy capacity of the replacement Battery is at least equal to that of the original Battery before the failure occurred while taking into consideration other factors, including the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Additionally, the warranty does not restart. So now i have a very limited warranty on a refurbished battery. Does not seem proper or good business
That's industry-standard. Warranties don't restart when parts are replaced.

Well-known Tesla hacker @greentheonly recently had a battery replaced under warranty. The replacement battery had less capacity than the original one that was replaced. He complained enough and Tesla replaced the battery again -- this time with a new one. I suspect that happened because of his "influencer" status and that a "mere mortal" might not end up with the same result.

Appreciate the input. And I agree Tesla is within their stated policy. I just think it is not right for the customer. As an FYI, when I picked up my serviced Tesla, I also picked up my new 2026 Model Y. I am very much pro-Tesla

I don’t think Tesla is looking at the rated mile estimate but at the kWh capacity remaining. Or there is a chance they have tried to slip this off as close enough. I would push back and ask them for their before/after data. I don’t know if you have much of a chance at success, but I think it’s worth a try.

I’ve understood for quite awhile that parts replaced under warranty are only covered by the original warranty. Parts you pay for get their own warranty. Does your original battery warranty go to 120k miles? That still gives you 34k warranty on this battery which seems fair to me. Their warranty for the car/battery was 120k miles or 8 years, and that’s what they live up to, not longer.

Appreciate the response. When I asked the service tech he did mention kWh capacity but to be honest it did not make complete sense to me. I may go ask for before and after to see what they say. I honestly don’t think Tesla is trying to take advantage of me but I also want to be protected with my purchase. Again, thank you
