I placed an order for a Model Y. I really want a hitch and am willing to wait till one is available. It's not listed on the order site currently. I emailed Tesla and got the following (encouraging) reply.

Hello B,
Thank you for contacting Tesla and for your Model Y order!
Once our Model Ys are ready for deliveries, our sales team will contact you to finalize your vehicle configuration.

Further customization options such as the tow hitch add-on will be available during your configuration confirmation.
You can also contact our sales team directly for further assistance and you can find contact information for all of our showrooms at the following page:www.tesla.com/findus
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns and thank you for your support to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.
Best regards,

That suggest to me that there will be a second ordering stage where folks are allowed to change, to some degree, their initial order. This is in alignment with the Model 3 which started only with the LR RWD. When your number came up to order, you were allowed to get the LR RWD or to wait about 6 months for either of the AWD models. At that point, there hadn't been as much price shuffling, so cost wasn't as big of an issue.

Just because Model Y doesn't have a hitch installed from the factory doesn't mean it can't tow. Tesla has tested it with trailers and carrying various things. Trailer mode is in the software and there's a lights plug in the rear facia.

I'd put an EcoHitch on it, problem solved.

Trevor,

Do you have absolute confirmation of either of those things? As far as I've heard, the "trailer mode in software" has only been dug up by a hacker, there's no confirmation that it's coming to the US/Canadian market - might be European only. And none of the posts or videos from Y owners who have opened the "mystery hitch cover" have reported a lighting plug. If it's real, how many pins are in it? Do we know which of the many connector types it is?

As I recall the trailer plug on my Model 3 was tucked away inside the rear fascia and not visible unless you take it off. I haven't seen anyone take off the bumper on the Y yet but based on what Tesla usually does I'm pretty sure it's there, just the hitch isn't available from them yet.

Sweet! My Model Y reservation is in the purgatory state, meaning I'm past the point I can edit the design, but I don't have a VIN yet so manufacturing hasn't started. I called Tesla and the person was also not able to edit the design but put in a note to the factory to add the tow hitch option. No word yet if it is a factory install only or afterwords like the roof rack option. So, yes finally I'll can use my hitch-mount bike rack!

The chat icon is an elusive beast. For me at least, I've never seen it even when on the correct page and during their supposed open chat hours. I called the 1-888-518-3752, 1-888-51(TESLA) number which was on my reservation page, back when I could edit the design but that number disappeared, weird. That's the number I called and they initially said they couldn't add the tow-hitch without the car and FSD going up in price. I guess the guy wasn't satisfied having to tell me that so he chased down a better source at the factory, that the tow-hitch option can be ordered and installed after the fact at a Service Center. Hopefully that gets posted in some official form other than me telling everyone on here. If it ends up being completely incorrect then the best I can do is an aftermarket hitch.

Thank you for your response. I wanted to provide an update from just 2 minutes ago. I loaded the Tesla main page on a new chrome browser page and the chat icon appeared (perhaps they disable it for the weekend). I provided my order number and asked the guy to add a tow hitch option to my order. He did it live and I received a confirmation email from Tesla within 3 minutes showing me the new invoice (with the hitch option listed and the $1000 cost increase). I recommend you simply try again with a new chat and make a simple request (but perhaps do not reference your prior experience so not to complicate things). The whole chat should be around 5 minutes.
