Screen fried because I left the original plastic on the display?

That's what the Tesla repair guy just told me. My screen stays black after resetting. He said a static electric build up fries a chip inside the display if you don't remove the original plastic from the display. I think I left it on when I first got the car and forgot that it was there. Does this make sense to anyone? If it destroys the display they should tell people to remove it. I'm not happy about the cost of a full screen replacement. Has anyone heard of anything like this? This is on one of the first 50K 2018 Tesla 3s.

I bought my 18 used a year ago, and it still had the original film on it.

That's just flat-out BS. There's plenty of drivers that keep the plastic on for a silly amount of time, and hundreds of thousands of owners with PET (plastic) or glass screen protectors. You can a replacement screen from eBay for a lot less than Tesla will charge you, they're not difficult to switch out.
