Since upgrading to iOS 18.5, volume control on my Tesla doesn't work

Before upgrading, when playing music on my iPhone in my Tesla on Bluetooth, I could adjust the volume via the steering wheel controls. I've done this for 4.5 years. It was always interacting with the phone to do this - you could see it on the phone screen.

After going to iOS 18.5, when I try to use the steering wheel controls, I get a very brief change in volume and then it snaps back to the previous setting. That means I have to control volume via the iPhone's controls, and it's against the law to touch my phone while driving in my state.

I'd like a way to revert to the previous behaviour. Has anyone solved this?

Clearly, iOS changed, but I've asked this Q on the Apple Support forums and got only a guy insisting that my battery could be weak (sheesh).

If relevant, on iOS I have Bluetooth -> Tesla Model 3 -> Device Type set to "Car Stereo".

I was going to ask if it's set to Car Stereo. And since it is, change it to something else. Interact with it on the phone and on the Tesla. Then change it back to Car Stereo. Maybe even do a hard reset on the iPhone.

Thankfully this isn't an issue on iOS 26, thus far the only issue that I've seen is using the Share feature for Maps. Like when I look something up on Apple Maps and want to share it with my Tesla. It gives me an error. Apparently, I haven't tried it, it still works with Google Maps.
