I read an article about this problem and have experienced it first hand. After a software update, power steering assist error message appeared and could not turn steering wheel. Reset software a couple of times - no success. Left the car for a few hours. When I returned, it was working.

It sounds like the update turned off the power steering drive, and then CANbus detected it as being "non-functional" because of that. When the normal drive cycle initialization occurred again, it re-powered and CAN saw it again.

I've experienced this about 10 times now in my 2020 Model 3. The first time was really shocking and I am certain my wife would not have been able to keep control. In addition, I have not had FSD nor Autopilot working since the first time it did it. There used to be a shutter in the steering wheel when first backing up out of a parking spot but it does not do that anymore.
