I think the only "trick" is that the car doesn't realize that it's home.
Probably due to some Tesla mapping failure for your home address.

If you try to navigate to home while you're home, does it show anything?

 

I think my home is set up but let me ask another question relating.

If I have sentry mode turned on and Home as an exception, it seems that if I go and try to open the car, I get a security warning. So, are there other triggers besides the cameras, like trying to open the door, or shaking the car? These triggers cause sentry to alert even though home is excluded?

I hope I am being clear.

 

Another related question When Sentry is ON I assume the cameras are what runs down the battery. Would other triggers like trying to open a door also run down the battery?

It's mostly the computers that need to remain running, but yes.

If your car was actually in sleep mode, then opening a door will wake it up, causing it to use more battery again until it goes back to sleep.
But if Sentry Mode is on, then your car is never entering sleep mode, so opening a door will make little difference.

I have my Home location excluded from both Sentry Mode and Automatic Door Locks.
Nothing triggers for me. When I try to open a door, I have to wait a fraction of a second for the car to wake up and actually unlock the door.

 

I have not tested sentry mode.

I tried to enter long lat but the car would not take it. It did take my home address however and this is what I set to Home. There is still some issue I have not figured out.

 

Does my Telsa Y even have a sleep mode? If so how do I set it? My manual does not mention sleep mode I don't think.

 

All Tesla enter the so called "sleep mode" when the internal systems are no longer in use.
For exemple, every time you shutdown your Tesla, there is about 15 minutes when the internal systems are doing their thing then, if not charging, it will go in sleep mode.

 

Try going somewhere away from home with your car. Then in a parking lot, remove your home address. Then re-add it and assign it to home. Then drive home to see what happens. I got a new keycard (and I also use my phone as a key) but for the life of me it would not recognize that I was home even though everything looked fine. So one said to try this trick, and it worked for me.

 

@hamil.cooper To confirm if Sentry mode is active, lock your car and step away from it, pull up your Tesla app on your phone and check to see if you have an option to View Live Camera. It will be at the top similar to below: If Sentry mode is not enabled, you won't see this option. Either way, you can also scroll down on the app and tap on Security and Drivers to enable or disable Sentry Mode.

Earlier you stated that you got an alert when trying to open the car. This will occur regardless of Sentry Mode being enabled or not. There will be a message on the main screen instructing you to tap the key card or use your phone - again, this occurs regardless of Sentry Mode being enabled or not. Sentry Mode just means that the car is ready to record, and will record, if it senses activity nearby.

"Sleep Mode" is what the car does automatically when you lock it and walk away from it and the phone key is then out of range. If your car senses you (your phone key) near by you may hear a click or two as it wakes up.

That option is only available if you have premium connectivity.

In the app, you can scroll down to "Security & Drivers" and click that. There will then be a radio button for Sentry Mode that will tell you if it's active.
