😭😭😭😭 Tesla just called me and since my reservation is past the point of editing the design but before the VIN, adding a tow-hitch now would essentially raise the price overall by $2990, yikes! This is because since my initial reservation, the new cost of FSD is +$1000, vehicle cost is +$990 and the hitch option is +$1000. That sucks☹ I guess it's either after the fact install at the service center or aftermarket Hitch. Bottom line if you have a Model Y reservation and can still edit the design, try doing that but you might also get hit with additional, higher cost of other stuff, if you bought FSD.
Then perhaps you're better off waiting for an EcoHitch like I put on my car. It's cheaper and can safely tow 2000 lbs on a Model 3. I'm sure Model Y will be very close when they release it.

To follow up on this I was actually called again by the Tesla guy and he got a clarification that the Model Y tow-hitch option can be purchased and installed after the fact at a Service Center! Great news for people who already took delivery or were in the same boat as I was. But yes, ecohitch is a good option considering theirs for the Model 3 isn't exactly cheap and the Tesla hitch is at least double the price, though with installation👍 Then Model Y has a little more weight capacity than the 3.

Sweet! My Model Y reservation is in the purgatory state, meaning I'm past the point I can edit the design, but I don't have a VIN yet so manufacturing hasn't started. I called Tesla and the person was also not able to edit the design but put in a note to the factory to add the tow hitch option. No word yet if it is a factory install only or afterwords like the roof rack option. So, yes finally I'll can use my hitch-mount bike rack!
My order was in the same stage. i couldn't edit my configuration on line. I messaged TESLA, waited 1/2 hour while they transferred me to the order group and they were able to add the hitch and change my color selection as well. I'd rather wait and get what I needed than have to hassle with aftermarket or a separate service call if TESLA offers an after delivery option as I would expect.

What number did you call?

Re. Canadian orders : who can we call that can make changes to our orders?
I don't want to edit online - afraid to lose my pricing from last March.
With price changes and CAN dollar dip my posted DM is 7K less than today.
Has anyone in Canada been contacted about their delivery yet ?

This is indeed great news! Now the big questions become:
  • Will we be able to purchase a connector for the electrical connection to a trailer?
  • Will "tow mode" be released for the US market?
  • If we buy an aftermarket hitch, will we be able to use "tow mode" with it?
Looking forward to options...

I too have an order for model Y but edit is locked and no vin is created yet. What happened to the online chat window, I don't seem to see it any longer? where can I find the phone number to call help desk?
The chat icon is an elusive beast. For me at least, I've never seen it even when on the correct page and during their supposed open chat hours. I called the 1-888-518-3752, 1-888-51(TESLA) number which was on my reservation page, back when I could edit the design but that number disappeared, weird. That's the number I called and they initially said they couldn't add the tow-hitch without the car and FSD going up in price. I guess the guy wasn't satisfied having to tell me that so he chased down a better source at the factory, that the tow-hitch option can be ordered and installed after the fact at a Service Center. Hopefully that gets posted in some official form other than me telling everyone on here. If it ends up being completely incorrect then the best I can do is an aftermarket hitch.

Thank you for your response. I wanted to provide an update from just 2 minutes ago. I loaded the Tesla main page on a new chrome browser page and the chat icon appeared (perhaps they disable it for the weekend). I provided my order number and asked the guy to add a tow hitch option to my order. He did it live and I received a confirmation email from Tesla within 3 minutes showing me the new invoice (with the hitch option listed and the $1000 cost increase). I recommend you simply try again with a new chat and make a simple request (but perhaps do not reference your prior experience so not to complicate things). The whole chat should be around 5 minutes.
